Infrared (IR) machine is an often used electrotherapy modality in physiotherapy, which generates infrared radiation to provide superficial heat to the body tissues. The IR rays belong to the electromagnetic spectrum, which is just beyond the red light. These rays when used on the body enter through the skin causing thermal effects and hence IR therapy is used in pain relief, muscle relaxation and circulation.
IR treatment is primarily recommended in superficial conditions of muscle spasm, joint stiffness, subacute and chronic inflammatory processes, and soft tissue injury. A safe and easy-to-apply modality, it is a non-invasive one when applied with due precautions.
The infrared radiation transforms into heat energy once the radiation has been absorbed by the body tissues and it is the physiological effects of infrared therapy that takes place. Absorption of Infrared Rays Most of the IR rays are absorbed by the skin and subdermal tissues. The depth of penetration is about 2-3 mm. The interacted energy raises the vibration of the molecules resulting in the generation of heat.
Thermal Effects
1. Vasodilation Superficial blood vessels become dilated as a result of heat. Increases local circulation. Enhances nutrition and oxygen. Increases elimination of waste products.
2. Increased Metabolism Increase in body temperature elevates cell metabolic rate. Stimulates tissue repair and healing.
Effects on Nervous System Heat activates the skin thermoreceptors. Slows down action of pain fibers (gate control mechanism) Causes pain relief Reduces muscle spindle sensitivity that results into muscle relaxation.
Effects on Muscles Reduces muscle spasm Enhances muscle elasticity. Assisted in the relaxation of stiffness or tightness of the muscle. Influences on Connective Tissue. Elasticity of collagen fiber is raised through heat. Helps enhance joint mobility. Minimizes rigor in fascia and ligaments.
Acute inflammation or swelling – Heat can worsen inflammatory response.
Malignant tumors – Heat may stimulate tumor growth.
Recent hemorrhage or bleeding sites – Increases bleeding risk.
Areas with impaired sensation – Risk of burns if patient cannot feel heat.
Over eyes or reproductive organs – Risk of tissue damage.
Skin conditions (eczema, dermatitis, open wounds) – Risk of irritation or burns.
Fever or systemic infections – Heat may exacerbate condition.
Peripheral vascular disease – Heat may worsen circulation in compromised areas.
